Getting some concern for the future in the USA

Kinja'd!!!

First off, this gorgeous 6-series for your time.

Anyway, I’m concerned about the future of us car enthusiasts. With the EPA lobbying to basically shut down the racing car market, I feel like we are definitely going to not be able to enjoy cars anymore. Also, lobbying here and there, the TPP, all of this bullshit going on is just making me feel small. Am I just worrying way too much? I feel like going to Canada is the best option we as car enthusiasts have. Besides, very little import laws up there (R34 Skyline!). Should I stop worrying? At this point, I just don’t know what to do.

if the EPA changing laws about car mods is whats making you consider leaving America, well...you aren’t paying attention to politics

Canada isn’t the haven you think it is. We basically can’t get kit cars, and safety inspection are way more stringent.

canada is not the answer you are looking for, since our auto regulations follow the american regulations very closely.

If it changes in the USA, it’s bound to change in canada too.

we are too small of a market to actually really be different. sure our import laws is 15 instead of 25 but other than that pretty much is the same.

Also in some provinces like Quebec there are regulations banning RHD vehicles, now lowering past a certain point (even while visiting you will be pulled over and towed home at your expense) etc.

Oh, that’s the little tiny part of why I want to leave. You are definitely right with all the messed up garbage that is happening in politics. I wouldn’t be surprised if USA becomes a dictatorship in the near future.

I see the canadian auto market, like a testing ground for the american market. we get/got a few cars you can’t get, but you guys also get cars we don’t.

Not to say that you’re worrying too much, but have you seen the car ownership environment and policies in the rest of the world? Stuff like Asia where most countries tax cars by displacement ... my wife’s car in Korea was a 1.3L I4, here she has a 3.6L V6. And places like Singapore basically tax cars out of existence. And other places beat cars to death, basically.

Dude, you have no idea just how good you have it here.

Displacement - heavily taxed in most of the world. Did you ever wonder why so many engines are made to be 2 liters (well, 1998 cc to be under 2000 cc tax laws) ? See - pretty much the whole world

Inspections - some states do it, but most care only about emissions. In many parts of the world, inspections are a nightmare. Look into Japan for example.

Taxes - ours are so low it is not even funny. Look into car prices in Singapore, Brasil, Denmark, China - taxes are so high you could buy 3 cars in the USA for the price of one is those countries.

Selection - yes, there are some awesome cars we don’t get here. Yes, there are stupid import law limitations and 25 year or older law - I will give you that, and that is the worst of it.

But, here in states, we get a 7 liter Camaro Z/28 for the price of a Jetta in Denmark (if even). You can buy a V8 Mustang GT for about 30k. Your average commuter car is a Camry with a 2.4L 170-180hp, while most of the world gets a VW Lupo with a 1l diesel and 70hp or something awful like that. Average Joe can have a 400hp car without too much trouble.

You get gas for $1.50 a gallon, while most of the world pays about that for a liter (so, some 4 times more expensive).

You simply have no idea how lucky you are to live here.

And technically speaking, the EPA isn’t changing anything. Those laws about “unlawful modification” are already on the book and have been for years. They just aren’t enforced.

Look’em up.

The way I read it, the EPA is just looking to make sure the racing parts also meet their stringent requirements not necessarily to ban them. Considering they expect the Auto Manufacturers to test their own cars, report their findings AND be honest about it since they don’t have the manpower to do it themselves, do you really think they are going to be testing all the aftermarket configurations for the same?

We have stringent inspections but kit cars are allowed and modifications are allowed within reason. Also no 25 year wait for cars and we sort of share the same language. :)

Oddly enough I ordered 3 RHD vehicles (seperately) last year to Vancouver haha. I had to sell them as I needed the cash but I have family in many other provinces to register vehicles under.

Selection isn’t even as bad as people make it out to be. For every car we view as forbidden fruit in America, we have 5 awesome cars that some other part of the world cant get.

Price of a used Lotus Elise in USA $30k.

I’m sure there are other examples, I’m just overly obsessed about that car.

No just a way to limit enthusiasts. Same with certain suspension/performance mod restrictions etc. It’s Quebec, don’t ever live here.

If you are asking if bias exists, I would say yes. If you are asking if I think they are wrong, I would say not necessarily. I feel most legislation is overreaching and unenforceable therefore it will be reduced to just words on paper with not bite whatsoever.

What a bunch of dicks.

There is no chance of me ever living in Quebec. No offence.

The other provinces I think are fair game I think. Though to be honest I’m considering Gibraltar, Oz or BVI (English speaking near the sea) if I was to move abroad.

off the top of my head the Chevy SS. ps it’s only been a few years since scions are available in canada. One local toyota dealer just became an official scion dealer just 2 months before the announcement of killing off scion. Their ads on the radio still say now also scion dealer..

and you guys didn’t get the orlando, the nissan micra, the mazda 2 I believe.

Agreed. It used to be more pronounced, but there has been a rebirth of affordable performance in the USA, from small hatchbacks like Abarth 500 and Ford Fiesta, slightly larger ones like FoST or FoRS, Golf R, to awesome Mustangs and Camaros etc. There is barely anything made anywhere else where we don’t get a comparable car in one shape or another. Super cheap small pickups maybe? Capable off-road vehicles in stripper trim other than a Wrangler? Those are about the only ones we are missing
